These are the Dolch sight words — the 220 high-frequency words (plus 95 nouns) compiled by Edward Dolch in 1936. They make up roughly two-thirds of the words in most beginner readers, and most cannot be sounded out, so children learn them by sight.
Tip: laminate a sheet and use a dry-erase marker so the same words can be practiced again and again.
